Playing Church

All day Liam has wanted to pretend our house is a church. He plays the roles of band conductor - "I can play every instrument, even the trombone" - and pastor, while I co-star as a young congregant.

He began with an original composition, "Holy Holy Now", on the organ. Next he did the Children's Message. "Well, today we're going to talk about food," Liam said. "What's your favorite kind of food? What else do you like? Thanks, now you can go back to your seats."

After another hymn, "Trees of the Sermon of the Valley", he introduced the sermon. He said it was time for grown-up school, and everyone had to be very quiet, and it was going to take a long time for him to finish talking. But we could have a snack while we listened. Then he scolded me for making too much noise.

Some kids play house, others play school, and mine plays church. Thanks be to God, I guess.

  1. The latest on this: In today's sermon, Liam explained that when Jesus was born, he didn't have a beard. But when he become a grown-up he saved.
