My Facebook Diet

This summer I found myself checking Facebook more and more often, until it became a daily event. It occurred to me that I wasn't enjoying Facebook in proportion to the time I was investing in it.

What if I spent those 15-20 minutes a day taking a walk, or practicing my guitar, or - just imagine - actually phoning one of my friends? Would that be more satisfying? Would I fall completely out of touch with the three prolific posters who account for 50% of the stuff on my page, who also work less than 15 feet away from me?

As an experiment, I went on a Facebook Diet. I didn't look at it for a week. Today and I went back and scanned through everyone's posts. My conclusion? Aside from a couple of interesting photo albums, I didn't miss out on anything.

On the other hand, neither did I accomplish much in the way of replacing Facebook time with other pursuits. I was sick all week. Experiment to be continued...

Now of course I have to cross-post this on my Facebook page.

  1. Hey Karen,

I tried to add your blog as a subscription to my Google Reader account (so I would automatically see updated posts rather than having to check back on the site), but couldn't. Any chance it is a matter of your settings?
