Never thought I would be blogging about an HO scale layout

But I guess that's what I get for being the mother, and daughter-in-law, of railroad enthusiasts.  Or as I prefer to call them, train nuts.

During our New Year trip to Wisconsin, we were invited to the home of Pat, a good friend of my uncle.  Uncle John had mentioned that Pat had an impressive model railroad set up in his basement, but I was completely unprepared for what we saw: the entire basement, filled with platforms coiled and looped back inside each other, forming an incredibly accurate replica of Cajon Pass in California, circa 1950.  The scenery was spectacular.  Pat ran a couple of trains, and kept a bunch of diesel engines idling, because as he explained, that's how they used to do it.  Liam and Timothy were transfixed, standing on stools to watch the trains go by.  And although I have very little interest in railroads, I was charmed by the many whimsical scenes along the route (firemen rescuing a cat as a little girl stands by crying), and awed by the exquisite miniature detail of it all.

If you want to get a sense of it, there's a video on YouTube, from when Pat's house was a tour site for a model railroad convention.
