I am celebrating the end of summer by sampling all the delicious local produce I can get my hands on. This morning we went to the farmer's market for sweet corn and tomatoes and onions and peppers and carrots, and then we went home and feasted. While I was at the market, I even briefly considered buying beets. I don't even LIKE beets, but they looked so good and wholesome, scrubbed and sitting there in the shade, blushing and glancing up shyly.
We borrowed a pasta maker from some friends and we've made three batches of it in the last week. I didn't realize, until I read the instructions, that you can make pasta out of flour and water. That's it, simple. I got some semolina and messed around with the proportions and the kneading until I came up with a perfectly gummy-yet-not-tough fettuccine. We had whole wheat spaghetti with home made pesto, courtesy of the basil plants in my flower bed. Tonight we tried fettuccine again, and a cream sauce with roasted bell peppers and spinach.
And I haven't even mentioned the state fair yet. We went to the fair yesterday with Bill & MK. Liam was equally interested in the ceiling fans and the animals. He got to pet a newborn lamb and a floppy-eared goat, and he rode the carousel with me. I thought he might get scared on the tall horse by himself, so I got on with him. His eyes bugged out but I think he had a good time. Liam had his share of mini donuts, ice cream, and a big spoonful of honey. The rest of us indulged too, and by the time we got home, we were all ready for naps.
