A few spills

This morning Liam was sitting in my lap and reading a story while he drank a cup of milk. He pulled the top off the sippy cup and dumped it in my lap, causing me to shriek, and then Liam started crying...over spilled milk.

Shortly after that, I bumped the table and spilled my coffee. What a morning.

Liam himself has taken a couple of bad spills lately. Like most one-year-olds, he falls down about 20 times a day. (Most one-year-olds DO fall down a lot, right? Sometimes I wonder if Liam is particularly clumsy.) He usually brushes himself off and continues what he was doing, such as chasing me, kicking a ball, spinning in circles, or running for the joy of it. Sometimes there is a whimper, and a smile of encouragement from a parent, "you're okay."

But occasionally, Liam is not okay, and he makes this clear by holding his breath and turning bright red. Then he finally lets it out with a big howl. This happened last week at the cabin when he tumbled toward the fireplace, hitting the poker and the brick hearth on the way down, and fortunately escaping with only a bit tongue. Then a few days ago he split his lower lip when he smacked his face on the kitchen floor.

Sometimes I want to put a helmet on him and cover him in bubble wrap.
