Our house is so smart. Last night, I believe it saved us from an electrical fire.
We woke up at about 3:00AM when the electricity went out, and my first groggy thought was, great, it is the coldest night of the winter and our heater is no longer functioning. Will had the presence of mind to trudge to the basement and flip the breaker, and then everything whirred back to life. We shrugged and went back to sleep.
An hour later, the same thing happened. Except this time, there was a terrible smell of burning plastic. Our humidifier was smoldering. We'd tried to start it when we went to bed, and the LCD screen kept saying "Er" so we gave up. But we left it plugged in - a mistake, and a close call. Thank God for our vigilant circuit breaker.
