Nahualapa

Yesterday we visited another community, Nahualapa, home of another congregation Pastor Conchi serves. Here are a few pictures.

I was impressed with the industriousness of one of the farmers, Jose Antonio, who has taken advantage of several aid programs to improve his situation. He and Margarita have five kids so they have no choice but to work hard and find some innovative ways to make something out of nothing.

For example, he received some tilapia and constructed a small fish pond, but needed a way to aerate the water, so he hung a plastic bag of water over it with a tiny hole so that water would drip out very gradually throughout the day. It's important to find sole solutions like this, because if a machine breaks down it is difficult to find parts to repair it, and anyway there is little access to electricity.

Jose's family also has goats who provide breakfast for the kids, and he has a Lutheran cow. The joke was that you can tell they are Lutheran, because they walk single file with their heads bowed and don't say much.

I should point out that in the picture of the family, that is not a gazebo in the background, it is their house. The homes are small and don't always have doors or walls. This is Reina Isabel, Omar, their daughter, and her scholarship sponsor Linda.
