Last night we were invited to dinner at the home of the Lutheran bishop in el Salvador, Medardo Gomez. He spoke with much wisdom and pathos about the struggles of the people, and the role of the church, especially in health and education. But what was truly remarkable was what he said about the Salvadoran Lutheran church's stance on LGBT rights.
"We looked into the eyes of our gay brothers and sisters, and saw that they were children of God."
Homosexuality in this country is extremely dangerous. Pastor Conchi told us that her cousin was murdered for being gay. It's not just that people are rejected by their friends and families, or suffer discrimination. They live in fear for their lives.
When asked if it would be possible to officiate a same sex marriage in el Salvador, the bishop replied, "In our Lutheran theology, marriage is a blessing and not a sacrament. And those who request a blessing cannot be denied."
This was among the many reasons that Darold claimed, the strength we have drawn from your courageous witness is greater than anything you have received from us.
It was lovely to see these two old friends holding hands as we ended the evening by singing Amazing Grace, our voices lifting to the night sky.
How awesome!
