Day 2, en la comunidad

We spent most of today out in the community near our sister church. Cristo de Paz is in Galilea and the nearest town on a map is Rosario.
Our first stop was at the cathedral in San salvador. As we descended the steps to Romero's tomb on the lower level, I noticed they were uneven, and grabbed the railing. Unfortunately another member of our group tripped on the way back up. She broke her arm, which was terribly painful, and our bus ended up at the emergency room.
Next we visited a school in Rosario. The kindergarten class danced for us, the second graders let me take their picture, and the eighth graders told us their favorite computer games. It was exactly like schools everywhere, the way the sixth grade girls exchanged meaningful looks and giggled, and a third grade boy kept popping out and saying hello in English but would disappear before we could respond. And it was nothing like any school I've ever been in, the way everything was exposed to the outdoors and there were so few materials.
Next was a visit to a few homes in the community, and at one stop I sat next to this cute little guy in the photo. And finally, we had dinner in the home of a couple who had fought with the FLMN in the civil war, who now own a hotel and he is in the legislature. He had an amazing story which merits a whole separate post...
A full day.
