This morning in church, the first reading was somewhat dramatized, with people throughout the congregation saying names for God, a la popcorn.
"Yahweh."
"Wisdom."
"I want a snack!"
"Creator."
Timothy caught on to this game right away. He piped up with his own contribution.
Then for the second reading, we did a new song by Bret Hesla, our guest musician. It was a creation story along the lines of the 12 Days of Christmas, with the litany of days being repeated every time a new one gets added. My personal favorite was on the 10th day, the rabbits were romancing. But of course Liam loved the 1st day, because this creation story started out with a big bang. "Ka-POW! The light was sounding!" we sang, and Bret's young assistants popped paper bags and the lights flashed. Liam made me sing the whole thing again at home - fortunately I brought home a copy of the lyrics - and he had to re-enact the lights and the bang.
As we left, the lady behind us complimented me on what lovely boys Liam and Timmy are. This happens every single week. I am utterly frazzled by the end of the service, certain that the entire congregation, and the neighbors across the street (who can probably hear Timothy using his Outside Voice in the sanctuary), are at the end of their rope with me and my little imps. And then, someone puts a hand on my shoulder. "Your kids are so adorable/well behaved(!!)/sweet." Well. I'm so thankful that they are welcome in worship, rowdiness and all, and that we invite in some light hearted moments to engage them, and the children in all of us.
