54 Things

I am finally reporting on the Month of 100 Things. In January we accepted Dawn's challenge to get rid of 100 things from our house. It was not a complete success because a)we only got rid of 54 things, and b)we didn't really get most of it out of the house until mid-February when we dropped stuff off at the thrift store. Still, we followed the spirit of it.

Having just culled my closets and cupboards in December, doing it again in January was a challenge. I imagine a young monk, new to the monastery, being asked to weed the garden. Upon finishing, he is instructed to go weed it again. I guess it makes one seek out the less obvious "weeds" and also be mindful of the process, not just the goal. Over and over again, I wondered, how and why did we acquire this much stuff?

A few of the Things we got rid of were:

#18, a hair scrunchie from 1991.
#36, set of pillow cases with embroidered crosses. I felt a bit guilty about this one since they were made with great care as a wedding gift to us, but Will absolutely hates the way the embroidery feels under his skin, and besides...crosses? On our pillow cases?
#54, a couple extra pounds I'd picked up at Christmas!
