Painting class

I started a community education class tonight called Fundamentals of Oil Painting. Here is what I did in class tonight. I call it "Still Life with Bowl, Sort Of Messed Up Jug, and Spoon." We were learning how to get started by outlining the subject, blocking in color and form, and starting to pick out the darkest and lightest areas. This painting is about half done - it still needs a lot of blending and detail.

My proudest moment in class was when the instructor used my painting as an example. She liked the way I put shadows under things.

I was completely in awe of her, and honored to have a professional painter critique my stumbling attempts. There was a young woman in the class who apparently did not share this sentiment. She was precocious at best, bordering on rude. She refused to follow the instructions, and when the instructor spoke to her about it, she replied that she would paint however she wanted to! It also became clear that she had done a lot of painting before; I think she is an art student. Why would you enroll in a fundamentals of painting class, if you have experience and no respect for the instructor? (I secretly hope she doesn't come back!)
